i was talking several days ago with a believer who was telling me what an atheist is.

i personally do not have any gods, therefore i consider myself an atheist.

however this person was telling me that an atheist says there is no god.

You are defining it from a believers point of view (by that I don't mean that you yourself are a believer). If you have a glass of water on a desk, and you have another desk without a glass of water, do you describe that desk as being absent a glass of water? Of course not, it simply is.

Sorry that word means different things, according to http://uk.encarta.msn.com/dictionary_1861687496/belief.html it can also mean faith in God/s, it just didn't sound right to me as to my understanding atheism and religion are the same thing, atheism resorts to pseudoscience to make the point that god does not exist (they have a strong case against religions I agree but they dont have proof that a supreme being/s did not create the very first thing in the emptiness of the universe) , same with religion, it would be great if Jesus came back down and wrote a book that is actually inspired instead of this imperfect group of books called the bible but we are stuck with man's word.

a religious person is a science disbeliever, but what do you call an agnostic?

But atheism goes beyond science just as much as religious people go beyond what can be proven.

I need a show of hands: who believes the Bible and to what extent?

i'll start off.. i don't believe anything is divine about bible writings.

i believe there may be some marginal history although not much.

i think alot of folk tales and regional myths are contained in the old testament.

I dont believe it, it's not because of it's dark history, its contradictions and errors but because it is not clear, you really need blind faith to believe in the bible.

Im looking for proof, I'm reading books writing by Bruce M. Metzger to see if I can find something to see if I can find an answer to the different messiah of the OT and other issues.

I believe that if a debate like this ever ended up at court, the agnostic would win the case because religion and atheism can only go so far.

I would turn that around and back at him, I would write something like "even more of a reason to put your beleifs to the test, blablabla last thing you want is Jesus saying at armaggedon that he does not know you" then quote some bible verses, its best to be in the same frequency even if you dont believe in a God/s.

Why do you believe the bible? or not?

when i began questioning the religion i used the bible and their own statements to prove them wrong.

now, recently, i have began to realise that maybe the only reason i put any faith in the bible is because i was always raised to.. so my question is, after leaving the watchtower, what was it that made you decide the bible was worthy of belief?.

i am not asking about any continuing belief in god or disbelief, i am more conscerned about the first step (to me) right now of the bible itself.

Everything else about the bible not being the divine flawless word of God we can all agree is true, the bible has a lot of problems, I think even Paul was a false prophet.

To be fair, there is proof of an historical Jesus but does not say much about him or anything special about him, there was thousands of old texts from the NT in circulation in those days a lot more than any other books, early orthodoxy decided what went in the bible and they had to be in harmony with the four gospels (you can see why barnabas and thomas was never included, rev and hebrews shouldnt be in the Nt), all apostles put their life on the line this shows their believe in faith. When Jesus passed to heaven, other documents mentioned darkening of the that day in other countries which is in harmony with what the bible says (astronomy can not prove that this was an eclipse), the oldest book (page of the book) found which dates 70AEC was JOHN.

i have noticed that people that hold no faith in the bible can easily find reasons not to believe it is god's word.

likewise, i have found that when one does hold faith in the bible they can continue to believe it against any contrary evidence.

the torah not being written by moses is not a big deal to some, neither are the two creation accounts in genises.

Biblical? Even 587BCE is from secular dating, JW's use the secular date 539BCE as point of reference which with their understanding on daniel and jeremiah gives then 607BCE the destruction of Jerusalem, there are various ways to disprove this by either secular or biblical data, a good book about this is Gentile Times Reconsidered.

To me a religion is a belief of a higher being/s

Atheism is a disbelief of a higher being/s

Agnostic knowledges that he does not have all the answers.

They are not the absolute definition, it has more to do if you believe or don't in God or your not too sure, and there are hybrids of two or all three has you pointed out some, others could be put into one of 3 categories.
